How to Design Your First Shirt

Using AImake (The AI Design Tool)

If you want to create a custom design without knowing how to draw, AImake is your new best friend.

1. Open xTool Studio
2. Click the AImake button (bottom left corner)
3. Click “colorful printing” and pick a style (folk art, doodle, wall art, 1970s art, or mural painting)
4. Type what you want your design to be (you have 300 characters to describe it)
5. Click how many versions you want (I usually start with 2)
6. Click generate

The AI makes artwork for you in seconds. When you first sign up, you get 200 free credits. Each image uses 6 credits, so that's about 33 free designs. If you need more, 1,000 credits cost $10, which comes out to about 6 cents per design.

Editing Your Design in xTool Studio

Don't love your design right away? You can fix it.

To expand a cropped design:

1. Click on your design
2. Click “edit” in the top right toolbar
3. Click “AI Expand”
4. Click “free” and drag the bounding box bigger
5. Click “generate” (uses 6 credits)
6. Your design is fixed!

To remove a background:

1. Click on your design
2. Click “edit” in the top right toolbar
3. Click “AI Cutout” (uses 6 credits)
4. Click “confirm”

Getting Your Design Ready

The xTool apparel printer can print projects up to 13.5 by 17 inches. That's about 2 or 3 adult-sized designs on one sheet of film.

Before you print:

• Make sure your design doesn't overlap onto the dark gray band on the side (that's for printing color bars)
• Remember to cut off those color bars after printing

The Printing Process

This is why it's so much faster than old-school DTF printers where you print, wait, add powder manually, then cure separately.

Working on Multiple Designs at Once

You can design more projects while the machine is working. Just open a new project tab in xTool Studio and keep designing. The printer even lets you queue up new jobs while the current prints are curing.

1. Cut all your prints at once
2. Pre-press all your shirts at once
3. Match each design to the right shirt color

Since DTF is a cold peel, you can press one shirt, set it aside to cool, and immediately press the next one. By the time you're done pressing them all, the first one is cool enough to peel. This keeps you moving fast.

Tips for Perfect Results

About Curing

The automatic shaker and curing oven are what make this printer so good. When I used to cure prints in my regular heat press, it took forever and the heat was never even. The dedicated oven works way better.

Flip your finished transfer over and you'll see that perfect orange peel texture on the back. That's exactly what you want. It means the curing is even and consistent every time.
