The Email That Ended My Shop
On August 29 I got an email from Etsy. The subject line was that my account had been suspended for policy violations.
Unfortunately, after careful review, your shop and Etsy account are now suspended for violating our terms of use based on potentially fraudulent activity in your seller account.
It also said I could no longer sell or even shop on Etsy using that account, or any other account I create.
Read that last part again. I am not allowed to buy anything on Etsy anymore either.
Here is what the email did not contain: an order number. A suspicious transaction. A listing. A warning. A single example of anything I supposedly did.
I checked my spam folder. I searched my whole inbox. That email was the only explanation I ever received.
This was not a shop I opened last week. I spent years building it. I have YouTube tutorials and blog posts that send people to my Etsy listings. I had just had 500 business cards printed with my Etsy shop on them. Those are trash now.

I want to be precise about this, because it matters: Etsy did give me a category. They said potentially fraudulent activity. What they will not give me is anything I could actually check, correct or dispute. You cannot fix a problem nobody will describe.
You Cannot Contact Etsy Without an Account
I assumed there had to be a way to reach a human, so I went to Etsy's Help Center.
To contact Etsy, you have to sign in to your account.
I cannot sign in to my account. That is the entire reason I am contacting them.
So the way Etsy wants me to ask about losing my account access is through the account they took my access to. If you are suspended and hitting this same wall, it is not you doing it wrong. That is genuinely how it works.
What You Lose Besides the Shop
This is the part I had not thought about until it happened, and it is worth knowing before it happens to you.
You lose the things you already bought. Over the years I purchased digital designs and files through Etsy. I paid for those. I cannot log in to download my own purchases.
You lose what you paid in fees. Every time I created or renewed a listing, Etsy charged me. I spent years paying listing fees to build a storefront I can no longer open.
You lose every link pointing at it. My tutorials, my blog posts, those business cards. Every one of them still sends people to a shop that is not there.

My problem is what happens when the system decides you are the scammer. Was my account hacked? Was there a transaction that looked odd? Did something completely legitimate trip a threshold? I do not know, and they have specifically told me they will not say.
Taking away something a person spent years building and then giving them no meaningful way to question it is the part I cannot get past.
How to Protect Your Etsy Shop Starting Today
If you take one thing from what happened to me, make it this list. None of it is difficult. All of it is much easier before you need it.
Back up every listing. Product photos, videos, titles, descriptions, keywords, prices and variations. Keep them somewhere that is not Etsy.
Download any digital files you have purchased. If you bought designs, fonts or templates through Etsy and might need them again, get them onto your own drive now. I cannot get mine.
Build an email list. It is the only audience you actually own. Platforms rent you access to customers. An email list is yours.
Have your own website if you can. Even a simple one. It gives people somewhere to find you that nobody can switch off.
Give customers more than one way to reach you. If every route to your business runs through one platform, that platform is your business.
I knew all of this in principle. I had always heard you should not build your whole business on one platform, and I have watched it happen elsewhere. TikTok went dark in the United States for a stretch, and creators who had spent years building audiences had no idea if they were getting them back. Then the old creator fund was replaced with a completely different program with different rules about what could earn.
That is the risk with any platform you do not control. They can change the rules, change how you get paid, or vanish.

Why I Am Rebuilding on Shopify
Etsy was always meant to be step one for me, not where my store lived forever. The plan was to take all those product photos and descriptions and gradually move everything to my own store on my own timeline.
